At the Geneva motor show this week, Porsche’s new 911 GT3 RS had to settle for second place under the limelight thanks to the world debut of the all-electric Mission E Cross Turismo

Porsche, the Stuttgart truck company, showed up at the Geneva motor show with the Mission E Cross Turismo concept that’s supposed to preview a potential product-version of an electrically-powered Cross Utility Vehicle. We tend to call those crossovers in short.

The Germans say that there is plenty of demand out there from individuals with active lifestyles to drive around in an all-wheel drive vehicle with a raised ride height and knobby tyres and plastic body cladding, while also avoiding taxation with a zero-emissions drivetrain.

So Porsche answered the demand with this estate concept (because come on, it’s neither a CUV nor a crossover) that features a system total output of 600 horsepower thanks to two electric motors. This allows the Mission E Cross Turismo to reach 100km/h from rest in 3.5 seconds and go on to a top speed of 200km/h, all accompanied by merely the whirring and whizzing of electricity.

Although it’s just a concept that made its premiere at the Geneva motor show this week, Porsche is actually pretty serious about putting this thing into production. Company boss Oliver Blume said: “The Mission E Cross Turismo is an expression of how we envision the all-electric future… Our vehicle will be fast to drive, but also quick to recharge and able to replicate its performance time after time.”

As a development of the Mission E study that Porsche first showed off at the Frankfurt motor show back in 2015, the Mission E Cross Turismo might come to market sometime after 2020, because the Mission E itself is scheduled to make its production-ready premiere next year.
